MS06-042 has been re-released for IE 6.0 SP1, after issues with the initial release proved very problematic.
That problem with the first release introduced a vulnerability affecting IE 6.0 SP1. Now that Microsoft has fixed the fix, the patch has been re-released.
Tony Chor, posting on the IE Blog, announced the news:
This morning we re-released our August security update (MS06-042) for IE 6.0 SP1. This update is available through all of our normal release channels including Windows Update, Automatic Update, Download Center and our deployment tools such as WSUS.
As I mentioned Tuesday, the original release of MS06-042 introduced a new security vulnerability for IE 6.0 SP1 users. This re-release fixes that vulnerability. We recommend all IE 6.0 SP1 customers install the update immediately. Users running Windows XP SP2, Server 2003 SP1, IE 5.01 on Windows 2000, or any of the IE7 betas, The IE7 Release Candidate 1, or Windows Vista are not affected and do not need to take action.
Microsoft has been readying IE7 to replace the IE6 versions. By the end of the year, Microsoft expects to have IE7 ready to distribute through automatic update to millions of machines. Ahead of the formal release, Microsoft's IE team has an IE7 Release Candidate 1 available for download.
Internet Explorer general manager Dean Hachamovitch noted in that blog post how there have been "improvements in performance, stability, security, and application compatibility" with the change from Beta status to Release Candidate. It should be a relatively easy path to move from the IE 7 beta to RC1:
First, IE7 RC1 setup automatically detects and uninstalls previous IE7 betas before trying to install IE7 so you don't have to. We'll post more detail on the install/uninstall process very soon.
Second, IE7 RC1 will automatically detect add-ons with known stability or compatibility problems so that end users can easily get a newer version or temporarily turn the add-on off. The most common cause of the "IE7 installed but won't run" problem reports we've gotten was old versions of some toolbars. We've worked closely with toolbar vendors to make this experience better.
