Kevin Mitnick, the well-known hacker-turned-security-consultant, was hit by an instance of cybercrime over the weekend when his own sites were defaced. Vandals (based in Pakistan, according to several sources) left a message that proclaimed "ZMOG!! THE MITNICK GOTZ OWNED!!" along with a few things that seem better left unrepeated.

The Channel Register did take a screenshot of some of the damage, if you're that curious to see it. According to the article, the defaced websites included defensivethinking.com, mitsec.com, kevinmitnick.com, and mitnicksecurity.com. CNET posted several quotes from an interview with Mitnick.

"The Web hosting provider that hosts my sites was hacked," Mitnick said. "Fortunately, I don't keep any confidential data on my Web site, so it wasn't that serious. Of course, it is embarrassing to be defaced - nobody likes it." Another quote also indicated that he was "taking it well."

"When you're with Web hosting companies, your security is as good as theirs," Mitnick stated. "You just have to live with that. When you want to raise the bar, you have to set it up yourself. I don't have the time to maintain a Web site."

"Mitnick has been targeted by defacers in the past," the Channel Register article noted. The site defenseivethinking.com was "defaced repeatedly by different crackers" soon after he set it up. "However, the theme of these attacks . . . was more ‘welcome back Kevin' rather than anything more offensive."

The CNET article added that, in regards to this weekend's attack, "Mitnick doesn't know how the server containing his Web site was compromised. He plans to investigate that at a later time. It could be that a security flaw on one of the other Web sites that was hosted on the same server gave the attackers a way into Mitnick's portion of the machine, he said."
