Chris Gladwin's last venture allowed a lot of people to get a lot of music - he was the founder, president, and CEO of MusicNow. After selling MusicNow to Circuit City, Gladwin created a system that helped him protect his music and other data files. That system, called Cleversafe, is widely available.
Cleversafe relies on an approach known as "dispersed storage." It "uses information dispersal algorithms (IDAs) to separate data into 11 unrecognizable DataSlices and distribute them, via secure Internet connections, to 11 storage locations throughout the world, creating a storage grid. With dispersed storage, transmission and storage of data is inherently private and secure. No single entire copy of the data is in one location, and only 6 out of the 11 nodes need to be available in order to perfectly retrieve the data."
The system provides a measure of safety against all sorts of problems. "Data on the grid remains private and secure in the face of natural catastrophes, or failures of hardware, connection, facility, or IT management," the website assures readers. "Moreover, the individual data slices do not carry enough information for an unauthorized viewer to determine the original content."
Steve Tuecke is a founder and the chief technology officer at Univa. He spoke to the New York Times as his company thought about employing Cleversafe. "The potential to be able to geographically distribute data over the Internet has very nice properties," Tuecke said.
For more information, you might check out Cleversafe's FAQ Summary. There is also a forum, and although there are only 67 registered users on it, they've generated a fair amount of discussion. Cleversafe is an interesting system, and, at the moment, it's free.
