Microsoft hasn't even released Vista yet, but it's already patching it. "Fixes" have been issued for the beta version, anyway. Depending on one's point of view, that could be a good thing or a bad sign - great customer service, or a really shaky start for the operating system.
"Windows Vista is the first major Microsoft product release that will be serviced with security updates throughout the beta process," wrote Alex Heaton on the Windows Vista Security blog. "We are committed to release Windows Vista updates for all MSRC critical class issues that may arise during the beta testing period."
This wasn't a problem that I had considered, but Microsoft apparently isn't going to put a higher priority on its unreleased software than its current crop of products. "We strive to release any Windows Vista updates as soon as possible, but our priority will be to release the updates for Windows products that have been released to manufacturing," Heaton continued.
So far, there have been only two critical updates that "affect Windows Vista Beta 2 or later." Of course, one must weigh the small number against the word "critical." And Robert McLaws pointed out that these patches were "not the first for the product, as many news outlets are reporting."
A "Security Update for Windows Vista December CTP (KB912919)" was issued on January 13, because "a remote code execution security issue has been identified in the Graphics Rendering Engine that could allow an attacker to remotely compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it."
So, seven months between patches . . . . Again, you'll have to make up your own mind on the issue.
