The MS06-040 security bulletin proved to be such a critical threat that the Department of Homeland Security urged Windows users to implement the patch, but it now appears the patch itself had some issues as well.

There seems to have been a fault with the most widely discussed Microsoft patch in some time, too. Microsoft cited an issue that could occur with 32-bit programs in certain circumstances. From the latest update:
Programs that request lots of contiguous memory, such as one gigabyte or more, may fail with an unexpected error after you install security update 921883 on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. For example, programs such as Microsoft Business Solutions - Navision 3.7 may fail.
Native 64-bit applications do not have the problem, according to Microsoft. Only 32-bit programs running on the following platforms have experienced issues:
• A 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003 with SP1
• Windows Server 2003 with SP1 for Itanium-based systems
• x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003
• Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
Microsoft does have a hotfix available for problems as described in their update. To obtain the hotfix, customers must contact Microsoft by telephone. They recommend applying the hotfix only to systems experiencing the problem as specified in the update.
