Ten Windows and two Office security bulletins will be made available on August 8th as part of Microsoft's typical monthly release schedule.
There will be Critical issues updated with next Tuesday's patch updates, Microsoft noted in its advance notification security bulletin.
Complete details on the bulletins will not be available until the patches have actually been made available for download. Users with Automatic Update configured for their PCs should pick up those patches without an issue.
Part of the circumstances surrounding patch releases have involved the swift creation of attacks that target vulnerabilities covered by the patch. The thinking here is that not everyone will patch their systems immediately, for whatever reason, and a quickly built exploit could impact those systems.
One issue we think will be patched with the Office updates is the hlink.dll boundary error that can be exploited through a malicious link in an Excel document. Secunia rated this one "highly critical" and it looks like a definite candidate for Patch Tuesday.
Another highly critical vulnerability that looks like a candidate for a patch in August became known during HD Moore's month of browser bug disclosures. The issue, which was reported to Microsoft in March, can crash IE 6 on a fully patched Windows XP SP2 machine.
