In the "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" department, Microsoft has taken Vista to the Black Hat security conference. About 3,000 people will get the opportunity to take a shot at Microsoft's oft-delayed baby. The lessons from this could really improve the product - assuming it survives, of course.
The Associated Press noted that the Redmond-based corporation is doing this only "after suffering embarrassing security exploits over the past several years." The AP also observed that Microsoft has received "blistering criticism for security holes that have led to network outages and business disruptions for its customers."
The company definitely had reason to try something new. Going to Black Hat isn't actually as surprising as it might sound, though. Microsoft had already announced plans to take Vista to the Hack in the Box Security Conference 2006, which will take place in September.
Jon Callas, the chief technology officer at PGP Corp., nonetheless seemed to admire the bravery of visiting Black Hat. "They're going directly to the bear in the bear's lair," he said. "They are going to people who don't like them, say nasty things and have the incentive to find the things that are wrong."
The Associated Press also got a brief quote from Andrew Cushman, Microsoft's director of security outreach, explaining the company's presence. "You need to touch it, feel it," he said. "We're here to show our work."
There have been many complaints concerning Windows security, and the industry also seems fed up with Vista's delays. If the Black Hat conference goes poorly for Microsoft, we may be looking at more problems in both of those areas. Then again, if all goes well, everybody wins.
