McAfee released five new security products today, with four of them each offering a different level of protection. This could be a brilliant move, if people feel the need to "max out" and buy the most expensive suite. It might be less successful if everyone tries to skimp. The fifth product is an application for wireless security.

McAfee Total Protection, McAfee Internet Security Suite, McAfee PC Protection Plus and McAfee VirusScan Plus, are, according to CNET's Joris Evers, "based on the company's new Falcon technology and are designed to compete with products from Symantec and security market newcomer Microsoft."

Both "Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare and Symantec's upcoming Norton 360 are pitched as ‘one size fits all,'" Evers reported in his article. Some people believe McAfee's line of products will effectively compete with these offerings. "I think that it is a great move for McAfee," said Natalie Lambert, an analyst with Forrester Research.

"They are able to have an offering that will work for anybody," she continued in an interview with CNET. "Their basic offering will be less expensive, while the highest one has features the competition does not have." The four related McAfee products range in price from $39.99 to $79.99. The wireless security application is $29.99.

One potential problem with this plan is "security envy." If buyers of the bottom-end product are plagued with a problem that doesn't affect those who forked over $80, they may become displeased with McAfee, regardless of whatever disclaimers they agree to.

Yet consumers have kept silent over comparable issues - when early Ford Focus models were recalled because "smoke, fire, or melting" might occur, for example, owners didn't complain about the relative safety of the Crown Victoria. Of course, hopefully McAfee's products won't cause anything nearly so disastrous. It just remains to be seen whether this sales strategy will work.
