Mozilla has released Firefox 1.5.0.5. This version is a "security update" that patches not one, not two, but twelve security issues. "We recommend that all users upgrade to this latest version," Mozilla said in a decidedly understated fashion.
The update "is part of our ongoing program to provide a safe Internet experience for our customers," the company wrote on the 1.5.0.5 page. A link from there shows that seven of the "fixed" issues were rated "critical" on the impact key. Two more were ranked "high," and three were "moderate."
Users who upgrade to 1.5.0.5 will experience "improvements to product stability" and "added changes for Frisian locale (fy-NL)," according to Mozilla, in addition to benefiting from the security fixes.
The 1.5.0.5 page goes on to list "some of the known problems" with this version, but there's nothing too unusual there. It's a really, really good idea for Firefox users to download this update.
The update comes, of course, even as Microsoft wraps up its work on Internet Explorer 7. The Redmond-based corporation is supposed to release the browser as a "high-priority automatic update," according to our David Utter, and not everyone's happy about that.
Firefox 2 is likewise supposed to be nearing completion. The beta version is already available. As always, Mozilla's Firefox provides a nice alternative to Microsoft's IE, and with the release of Firefox 1.5.0.5, it should be safer than ever. It will be interesting to see how each company's next-generation browser fares in terms of security.
