Did you expect Microsoft to stick to the latest Vista launch date? Don't hold your breath. The security firm Symantec says it has discovered a number of bugs and flaws in the operating system's networking technology. Microsoft's response was decidedly waspish.
The Redmond-based company was apparently given a copy of the report, and sent its response to CNET. "Given that Windows Vista is still in the beta stage of the development and not yet final, the claims made in this report are, at best, premature," Microsoft argued. "And given the extensive work we are doing to make Windows Vista the most secure version of Windows yet, we believe the claims are also unsubstantiated."
Symantec is supposed to release the report today. It claims that Microsoft has created new problems even as it fixed others. "Microsoft has removed a large body of tried and tested code and replaced it with freshly written code, complete with new corner cases and defects. This may provide for a more stable networking stack in the long term, but stability will suffer in the short term."
Another quote from the Symantec report acknowledges Microsoft's efforts, but discredits the company by making the issues seem inevitable. "While it is reassuring that Microsoft is finding and fixing these defects, we expect that vulnerabilities will continue to be discovered for some time." The blow was softened a bit by adding, "A networking stack is a complex piece of software that takes many years to mature."
It's impossible to say if fixing the bugs was on Microsoft's "to do" list. Now that Symantec has pointed them out, though, they should definitely be fixed - even if it does result in more delays in Vista's launch.
