Microsoft has announced plans to attend the Hack in the Box Security Conference 2006, an Asian hackers' conference. What's more, the company intends to bring along Vista. This isn't as strange as it sounds - an increasing number of businesses like to solicit the opinions of security communities (even shady ones) on their new products.
This practice has the potential to save a company's time, money, and reputation. If problems are found in the software before it hits the market, it's considerably cheaper and easier to correct the issue at that point in time. It also saves the need for patches and updates, which are at best a nuisance.
Microsoft's attendance could also help the company make some friends. Its products are popular targets for hackers, but by venturing out into the hacking community, the corporation can maybe, just maybe, win over some of the people who would have otherwise worked against it.
The HITBSecConf2006 will be held in September in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to the website, Douglas MacIver, a penetration engineer on the Microsoft Penetration Team, will speak. The title of MacIver's presentation is "Pen Testing Windows Vista BitLocker Drive Encryption from the Inside."
A page on the talk notes that it "is not a marketing or sales presentation," but rather "a forthright discussion of threats and mitigations." The overall tone is positive, and it sounds like both sides are looking forward to MacIver's talk. It should be interesting to see if that let's-be-friends attitude still exists after the hackers have been unleashed.
