Sophos has warned of a new phishing scam, which offers a $500 cash prize claiming to be from Gmail.
The email tells the user that by clicking on a link that is embedded into the message, they can instantly claim the prize.
It goes without saying that the link starts them on the path to a different kind of prize. It takes the user to a fake Gmail page, which is actually hosted on a Tripod site.
According to Sophos, the page claims that there was a problem sending payment, and requests user info and a membership fee of $8.60.
"Of course this email wasn't really sent by the folks at Gmail, and the $500 cash prize doesn't exist. Anyone tempted to try and collect it is in danger of walking straight into a trap set by these fraudsters," writes Sophos senior technology consultant Graham Cluley.
"People need to learn that there is no such thing as a free lunch, and to be much more wary of unsolicited email communications whoever they may appear to come from," added Cluley.
Indeed.
