Verimatrix released a statement on Monday that it will secure Russian Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) deployment. The Verimatrix Content Authority System (VCAS) will serve "the first ever interactive television service for the Siberian region of Russia."
In the press release, Verimatrix is described as the "developer of the most widely deployed IPTV content protection system with tier one operators." It was selected for this job by Norilsk-Telecom.
Evgeny Nickolaev, the Deputy General Director of Norcom, said, "Given the significant investment required to roll out a complete IPTV service and the critical importance of securing high value content to attract loyal subscribers, it was vital that we deploy the most reliable system possible with the best possible channel suppliers. Verimatrix's VCAS system is an essential part of offering a good-quality service; without this security we would not be able to source the compelling content from providers and protect our revenue streams."
VCAS is "a software-based solution designed to address the increasing security requirements imposed on video-over-IP systems. It is built on the principles of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and X.509 digital certificates, offering the most robust security solution for content streams in order to allow IPTV operators to secure premium content."
The Russian IPTV contract could put Verimatrix in a position to cater to a large audience. As described in the press release, "The project will begin in Norilsk and will ultimately include Norilsk-Telecom's subscriber base of tens of thousands of users." Given the number of people in the area, it could expand well beyond that.
