Three people in two countries found themselves in handcuffs as law enforcement cracked down on a trio alleged to have been involved with computer worm attacks.
A report on the Sophos security firm's website noted how the m00p gang has been mopped up by authorities.
The gang reportedly were working hard on creating a zombie network of compromised machines with their worm writing. Sophos said several worms it analyzed contained references in the code to the m00p gang.
One Trojan identified in 2005, called Stinx, also contained a m00p reference. Sophos said this worm had been crafted to take advantage of the DRM rootkit Sony BMG had placed on a number of PCs via certain compact discs purchased by the public.
"It's great to see one less virus writing gang, but the sad fact is, however, that this is probably just the tip of the iceberg," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "More and more criminals around the globe are being tempted by the anonymity the internet offers to commit their crimes online."
A 63-year-old man in Suffolk, UK and a 28-year-old man in Scotland were arrested with the help of the British Metropolitan Police's Computer Crime Unit. A 19-year-old man was taken into custody by authorities in Finland as part of the work by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation and the Finnish Pori Police Department, the report said.
