The GAIN platform delivers popup and pop-under advertisements, but Claria is changing direction with its business and suggesting users drop its software.
It's time to remove GAIN from any systems that still have it running, as a report on BetaNews noted the change at Claria.
Known at one time for its Gator software, Claria has been gradually reinventing itself in behavioral marketing and personalization technology. They had a brief flirtation with Microsoft in 2005, but Redmond chose not to go through with reported plans to buy the company.
Claria said in its exit statement from GAIN that it will stop delivering ads to installed instances of the application on July 1. After October 1, Claria will stop supporting GAIN and it "may not function properly" after that.
Reinventing itself appears to mean Claria will still function as a company that collects users' browsing habits. Its technology like the BehaviorLink network and the PersonalWeb beta product both focus on building on user behavior for a return on investment.
The company will have to make PersonalWeb a compelling, easy-to-use product. Claria's Gator history will work against it with long-time Internet users, but if it could score a deal with a recognizable brand name for marketing, Claria could find an audience among newer users.
