"I think security is only going to get worse and every proposed product is doomed to failure," Roger A. Grimes wrote earlier today. "I predict that within a few days the Internet will collapse and online communication as we know it will cease to exist and the Internet will have to be rebuilt from the ashes over the next six months."

Roger A. Grimes was just joking in that excerpt from an InfoWorld article. But he does find some faults with our current state of affairs. One of these issues - what he identifies as "the real computer security problem" - is "a lack of persuasive authentication." Grimes then imagines a "better world," writing, "If the Internet allowed default authentication and accountability for every packet and every program, from source to destination, hacking and malware would stop overnight."

Authentication has been a touchy issue in some corners. Many Internet users are anonymous, and would prefer to remain so. And some people would just prefer not to spend any more money than they already are. "That's fine" with Grimes. He still thinks there's a workable solution: "two Internets: one for default authentication (and encryption) and another for the untrusted world to play."

He's careful to note that "the solution to our security problems isn't a particular product or vendor." He only pushes the concept of persuasive authentication.

However rosy his ideas, Grimes remained realistic about the odds of their implementation. It "will probably only happen after multiple catastrophic e-commerce events and forced government regulation," he wrote.
