A new security survey from Datalink showed a disturbing number of "technology decision makers" feel vulnerable to network, host, and storage security breaches. These results come in the midst of a rash of news stories about stolen laptops, lost data tapes, and hacked customer information.

568 people completed the Datalink survey, and of those individuals, only 22% were able to report that their company has implemented a storage security solution. 67% of respondents believed their companies were either somewhat or extremely vulnerable to data security breaches. Their outlook on host security was only slightly more positive, with 61% claiming that their companies were either somewhat or extremely vulnerable. And 58% of those surveyed felt concerned that their company's networks were not as secure as they could be.

"The survey illustrated that organizations are definitely aware of data security risks. In fact, it's hard not to be with all the reports of lost data in the news recently," said Scott Robinson, Datalink CTO. "Many organizations are still in the early phases of implementing a storage security strategy, especially when it comes to data encryption."

He encouraged public companies to comply with established security regulations, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Many private corporations voluntarily comply with them in order to gain the trust of customers and partners. Some of the regulations qualify as "strong medicine" - SOX, for instance, threatens fines or even jail time for the public companies' executives who do not properly secure financial records.

"Clearly, organizations have been placing emphasis on securing their networks and access to data within the company for several years," Robinson said. "However, while most organizations send sensitive data outside the company, it's only recently become a major area of concern for them."

As the Datalink survey shows, a majority of "technology decision makers" recognize these security concerns. Hopefully they'll do something to address them.
