Microsoft is continuing to expand its security-related offerings as it adds two beta projects, Microsoft Live Labs Security Token Service and Microsoft Live Labs Relay Service, to its lineup.
The Live Labs research facility was created in January with former Yahoo researcher Dr. Gary Flake at the head. Its new Security Token Device is "an online identity management service that lets you offload authentication functions, whether you are a user signing-in to web sites and services or a site or service owner who needs to authenticate users," according to the software giant.
The service will "register your personal, virtual information card with the Microsoft Live Labs STS . . . . You can also register your site or service to use security tokens issued by this Security Token Service." The Security Token Device requires Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 and the WinFX Runtime Components Beta 2.
It remains unclear how this will act differently from the Windows Live ID. That is what Microsoft currently uses as an authentication system for Windows Live, Office Live, Xbox Live, MSN and other online services
The other product, Microsoft Live Labs Relay Service, "allows you to expose a Windows Communication Foundation based service to the Internet from behind a firewall or NAT." This "protects developers from having to create the complex code necessary to achieve seamless connectivity."
As with other Microsoft Live Labs products, the company wants your feedback if you try them out. If you intend to test them, though, you might want to visit the site soon - according to disclaimers, "Because this is an experimental service issues will probably occur and the service may be unavailable at any time. It might even cease to exist some day."
Now while that isn't the most encouraging statement, Microsoft Live Labs Security Token Service and Microsoft Live Labs Relay Service may still be worth a look.
