Microsoft is apparently focusing on security with the upcoming 2007 version of Microsoft Exchange Server.
For one thing, encrypted email can be sent between Exchange servers with no extra set-up required. CIO.com tells more:
New built-in protection features in Exchange Server 2007 include the ability for customers to purchase either on-premise antivirus software or a hosted version. As part of a new enterprise Client Access License (CAL) for the product, customers can purchase Microsoft's Antigen for Exchange antivirus software or Exchange Hosted Filtering services bundled with the Exchange CAL.
Antigen and Exchange Hosted Filtering both came in acquisitions Microsoft made last year -- the former from Sybari Software, the second from FrontBridge Technologies. Microsoft's server products include both per-server enterprise licensing and CALs, which are required for corporate users.
Email storage and folder policies are a couple of other areas where Exchange Server 2007 will surpass previous versions. Users will be offered 2GB of space instead of 200MB, and administrators will have policy options for compliance purposes.
Exchange Server 2007 is scheduled for a late 2006 - early 2007 release, with a final beta version due before September.
