The China Broadband Wireless IP Standards Working Group (BWIPS) has accused the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) of unethical actions attempting to tear down China's wireless encryption standard WAPI.
The accusations have surfaced as the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) meeting approaches in June, regarding a March vote that went to IEEE's 802.11i standard.
89% of ISO members that voted, voted in favor of 802.11i. 32% of the entire ISO favored WAPI. According to Wired News,
China has asked the International Standards Organization to nullify its decision due to what it calls the engineer group's "unethical activities," such as allegedly conspiring against WAPI, insulting China, and using intimidation and threats, Xinhua reported, without elaborating.
China said the IEEE unfairly violated International Standards Organization rules and misled national agencies, causing them to reject the Chinese standard.
