Research from RSA Security shows that the number of wireless networks in some of the world's biggest financial areas is increasing tremendously.
For example, in London, there are 57% more wireless network access points than there were a year ago. There has been a 20% increase in New York.
Over the past two years, Paris wireless access points have increased by an amazing 119% and in Paris wireless network encryption has grown 78%.
WEP encryption has jumped 9% since last year in London and 13% in New York. RSA Security Says: This is an encouraging sign, although in all cities around a quarter of the wireless networks identified as belonging to and operated by corporate entities were found to have no security measures deployed.
London has the most to be ashamed of with 26% of business networks unsecured; New York is not far behind with 25% and the Parisians come in at 22%. Clearly, work still needs to be done to educate these organisations about the risks they face if the appropriate defences are not deployed and enabled to protect their wireless networks. This is the fifth year RSA has carried out research on this topic, and the company points out that this is the first year they have seen such a large improvement.
