Verisign recently announced its acquisition of SSL provider GeoTrust, and Comodo has issued a challenge to VeriSign.
Comodo says it challenges Verisign to "end the practice of issuing low assurance, non-business authenticated SSL certificates without any means to establish true Internet and identity assurance as demanded by consumers, organizations and regulators."
Comodo says that Verisign's acquisition of GeoTrust is a positive first step toward Verisign's promise of ensuring the highest standards in identity assurance for online merchants. According to PCPro,
Verisign says that GeoTrust's network of 9,000 direct resellers in more than 140 countries will complement its own direct sales SSL business with more than 3,000 enterprise customers worldwide.
Judy Lin, general manager for VeriSign Security Services said in a statement: 'The successful channel business GeoTrust has built will benefit from our infrastructure and additional products. We look forward to leveraging the GeoTrust channel, technology and brand to expand on our existing SSL offerings.'
Comodo says that more SSL certificates can be expected to provide critical identity assurance for websites.
