Students at one school district in Illinois can get in trouble with their school if they are caught using a blog site depicting "illegal or inappropriate" behavior.
This is a rule that has been added to the code of conduct that all students (and their parents) must sign at Libertyville and Vernon Hills High Schools in District 128.
If students are caught abusing this rule, they are to face disciplinary action. I am not sure how this "disciplinary action" is specified or what all is deemed "inappropriate", but some parents are not happy with the district's new rule, and undoubtedly some of the students feel that the privacy of their social lives is being invaded.
"As parents we have the obligation to police our children while they are on the Internet. It is not necessary that the school board do this also," the Chicago Sun Times quotes one mother as saying.
The district takes the position that this is just an extension of a previously existing rule of disciplining students who engage in illegal or inappropriate behavior. Basically, why should the blog aspect make a difference?
Associate superintendent Prentiss Lea says that the district "has an obligation to preserve a sense of Internet security and safety for its students".
The rule is to go into effect at the start of the next school year, but the district says that it doesn't plan to actively monitor blogs for violations.
