You probably recall a slew of stories about Sony BMG being sued over CDs containing Rootkit software.
The company manufactured somewhere around 15 million CDs with the software and drew three separate class-action lawsuits, which have been put together into one settlement, though a settlement still awaits with the state of Texas, which sued the company over non-compliance with its anti-spyware law.
Sony is apparently happy enough with the outcome of the settement, which entitles people who bought the CDs to their choice of $7.50 in cash and a free album download, or three album downloads. Based on this article, it sounds like Sony is still going to have to deal with some other issues as well, though:Computer science researchers also found problems with another type of software Sony put on some CDs, called MediaMax. That software, written by SunnComm International, installs software without the user's permission, is difficult to uninstall, and surreptitiously transmits information about users' activities to SunnComm's servers.
Customers who bought MediaMax CDs can now get free downloads. Sony BMG has provided a list of all of the CDs affected.
