In response to a question from an audience member at the Future in Review conference, Symantec CEO John Thompson said that more people should buy Macs.
The reason being that virus writers tend to target Windows-based machines more frequently. In somewhat of a contradiction, however, Thompson made the point that if the majority became Mac users, the virus writers would probably also switch gears. Thompson is quoted by CNet's Tom Krazit:
"We shouldn't assume that any one technology at any layer is sufficient to protect our notion of a connected world," Thompson said. Computer users and network operators need to take many steps to ensure their data will be protected, regardless of which products they use, he said.
Thompson also pointed out that good deal of attacks are of the phishing kind, which don't care what operating system the user has. He did allegedly say, however that his next machine would be a Mac.
