The biggest security flaw in the X Window system since 2000 was caught and fixed by Coverity as a result of a contract with the US Department of Homeland Security.
The X Window System is a GUI used in most UNIX and Linux systems, and in some Macs. The flaw was discovered in versions X11R6.9.0 and X11R7.0.0.
These two versions were released at the end of last year as the first major updates to the system in over ten years.
The flaw itself was the product of a missing parenthesis in the code of a small portion of the program. This allowed the ability for local users to execute code with root privileges, which would let them overwrite system files and launch DoS attacks.
