Zhijian Chen, a man from Oregon was slapped with an $84,000 fine for selling fake anti-spyware software.
Chen tricked people by using the Windows' "Net send" command to put fake pop-up warning messages on their screens. People would then click on the link in the message and be taken to Chen's page followed by his company Secure Computer's site.
Users were offered a free spyware scan, and then the option to purchase the fake software for fifty bucks. Chen would then get a cut of the profits if the users fell for the scam and purchased it.
Included in Chen's $84,000 fine are $16,000 to those who were fooled by the scam and bought the software, $24,000 in civil penalties, and $44,000 in legal costs.
Other members of Secure Computer were also named in the suit, which was filed in January by Microsoft and Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna.
