One of the recent patches that Microsoft released (the KB908531 security patch) is not cooperating with various Hewlett-Packard products.
The patch, which corrects a flaw in Microsoft Internet Explorer that allows attackers to gain control of the user's computer, was released on April 11th.
Since then, there have been quite a few complaints around the net about the problems it has caused. HP products such DeskJet printers, scanners, cameras, and CD/DVD burners are among products that have been affected.
There have apparently also been reports about problems with Sunbelt's Kerio Personal Firewall related to the patch. Playsfuls.com says:
Among the noticed problems are the impossibility to access or save files in Windows folders such as "My Documents" and "My Pictures", Office applications which may stop responding without an apparent cause, system crashes when trying to open files, hangs-ups after typing an address in Internet Explorer or when right-clicking on the desktop.
The company mentioned that HP's "Share-to-Web" software and the Kerio firewall interfere with a file installed by the security update and has the role of validating shell extensions before they are initiated by Windows or Internet Explorer - verclsid.exe.
Microsoft has acknowledged the problems with its patch, and said that it will issue an update to fix it. Until then, users have been advised to make changes in the Windows registry.
