A deputy press secretary with the Department of Homeland Security has been put on leave with his security clearance suspended after his arrest on charges of propositioning a deputy sheriff he believed was a 14-year-old girl.
The 55-year-old suspect, Brian Doyle, found himself in handcuffs after police arrived at his Silver Spring, MD, home on the evening of April 4th and arrested him in connection with a sex-sting operation conducted by law enforcement officials in Florida.
Doyle faces 23 charges in Florida over his online conduct with the purported youth: 16 counts of transmission of material harmful to a minor and seven counts of use of a computer to seduce a child. That conduct included explicit sexual conversations duly recorded by Polk County, FL, detectives with the sheriff's office.
The evidence collected in the sting includes a picture of Doyle he sent to the victim. A Yahoo News story displayed the photo, showing Doyle wearing his DHS lapel pin and a TSA lanyard. The photo may have been taken in DHS offices.
Successful prosecution of all charges could result in a sentence up to 115 years in length, a spokesperson for Florida's 10th Judicial Circuit said in a USA Today report.
That article also cited commentary from the Polk County Sheriff's Office about their sting operation:
Spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said the sheriff's department has two full-time computer crime detectives who pose online as teenagers.
"He chose us. He initiated the conversation," Rodgers said. "This is how we catch predators."
And sometimes, they turn up in the most unexpected places, too.
