Apple continues improvements on OS X security with the second update in as many weeks. The new update, released today, comes as Apple has received much scrutiny recently regarding the security of the operating system and its accompanying programs.
According to Apple's site, the "Security Update 2006-002 is recommended for all users and improves the reliability and security of the following components: apache_mod_php, CoreTypes, LaunchServices, Mail, rsync, Safari".
Part of the reason for this update stems from some problems they had with the one the week before and corrected some other issues as well. One issues was tied to Safari. Apparently, they felt like enough wasn't done in the 2006-001 update so they've added some protections. The new correction "provides additional checks to identify variations of the malicious file types opened."
Also figured into this set was Mail correction. Apple said:
By preparing a specially-crafted email message with attachments, and enticing a user to double-click on that attachment within Mail, an attacker may trigger a buffer overflow. This could result in the execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Mail. This update addresses the issue by performing additional bounds checking. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4.
Apple advises users to immediately update their systems for these corrections. Also, users should make sure and keep their virus and spyware protection updated as well.
