Security software monster McAfee distributed a new virus definition list on Friday morning. The result was pandemonium as the list tagged a number of software programs, including Microsoft's Excel and lots of other applications. Fortunately for both consumer and enterprise antivirus users, they corrected the problem quickly.
The world's second largest security firm released a list of affected programs, which includes not only Excel and Graph but also Adobe Download Manager, Adobe Update Manager as well as a wide variety of important files within the Windows running system as well.
The false positives were followed with corrections fairly quickly. According to CNET's McAfee time line, they started getting reports of problems around 1 p.m. PST, by 2:30 p.m. they had reverted the definitions list and an hour later, they were starting the corrected updates for their corporate customers. McAfee said on their site:
"Users who have moved detected files to quarantine should restore them to their original location. Windows users who have had files deleted should restore files from backup or use System Restore.
McAfee has also posted a list of all the affected files. While this was potentially a disaster, McAfee's quick response saved everyone a lot of headaches.
