Finnish security phenom F-Secure put their "view of the world" online with a map of known virus outbreaks around the world on Thursday. The F-Secure World Map will allow anyone checking in on the map to see the outbreaks real time, on a roughly one hour delay.
The new system is based on a research tool they blogged about back in July. According to their blog, they got a lot of requests to post their map online for visitors and that's what they've done.
One simply goes to the map and users can choose their area of the world, whether it's Finland, India or Ohio. Users can see the worldwide map and see trouble spots around the world or the user can narrow things down further by choosing the continent, country and in some case like the U.S. the state.
Users also have a timeliness option. They can break it down to hour, current month, previous month, current year and previous year. This allows folks to compare and contrast various time periods. The screen itself has color codes to determine threat levels. For example, during the hour prior writing the story, South Carolina appears to have a viral epidemic. Many states in the U.S. had no data available. And the scale has six categories ranging from no data to epidemic.
A number of stats are also on the page including their top ten viruses, top families and top variants. They have an alert level gauge as well. For example, the top virus right now is the Trojan-downloader.Win32.Crypter at roughly 15.6% of the virus share. It also lists an "All Viruses" listing overall virus levels during the last few hours.
Overall, this is a pretty interesting tool. It allows visitors to get a gander at what's going on in the computer virus world and focus in on trouble spots around the world.
