Hacker Defender wasn't just A rootkit, it was THE rootkit for the longest time. The creator, called Holy_father, of said rootkit lowered his sword and yielded the way by taking down his antidetection service.
Hacker Defender was a trebuchet of sorts for hackers as it allowed them to get into Windows NT/XP/2000/2003 remotely and without permission. The only way to really fix it was to reformat the hard drive, which was an unpleasant solution for many.
According to emailbattles.com, the reasoning was "he doesn't feel he has anything new to offer in this narrow venue." The primary reason for his rootkit was "to constantly remind the world that the Windows operating system is woefully unprotected."
He told the online publication Windows versions were protectable and that's what he wanted to deal with although he did claim Windows 98 and Millenium were unprotectable and that it wasn't fair to write code to attack them.
His most interesting comments were some of his last regarding this issue. emailbattles.com talked him and he said it's getting tougher to stay ahead of the opposition. He also had nothing but praise for Icesword and F-Secure's Blacklight. They quoted his website saying, "watching them evolve has been a pleasure."
