One of the latest trends in terrorism is to vandalize websites through defacement. Sites are hacked and various messages resembling cyber-graffiti will be left on the sites. On Tuesday, the Paris PJ arrested the Moroccan hacker known as Yanis in Metz.
Yanis is charged with defacing multiple French websites, including sites for the Universities of Strasbourg and Toulouse and the website for the city of Lion. Cybercrime watchdog Zone-H, however, has monitored his activities and they appear to be much more complex. They claimed that during the "Prophet Mohammed digital Ummah" protest, there were 3,000 notifications of intrusions, 710 of which belonged to Yanis. His career includes over 1,161 compromised websites.
Zone-H said in a statement:
The attacks pursued by Islamic hackers have noticeably increased after the spreading out of the Prophet Mohammed cartoons issue, and many defacements, like those by Yanis, clearly show, sometimes violently and offensively, their blame for Danish and more generally Western attitude.
Relating to this point, the French magistrate charged a heavy count of indictment on Yanis, who is accused of "Apology of war crime and incitation to racial hate", because of his hacking activity on Danish websites. The accusation focuses on his commitment in the boycott campaign against Danish products.
Once again the digital ground becomes an instrument to support political and social insurrections, and the arrest of Yanis and the related gharges are a further confirmation.
What is important in this arrest is that it shows a new awareness and commitment of both private and public security institutions in the fight against cyber-crimes, by converging the general attention on the way they will move to face it.
Interestingly enough, during the writing of this story, Zone-H contacted this writer with additional information regarding a defaced site. The site www.beetlejuice.dk had been hacked with a message previously, but they've added another feature. On the right, there is a a poll from the jyhadi hackers for public consideration of future hacking actions. Zone-H said the Ashiyane group contacted them and requested them to call for the release of Yanis and they would cease attacks.
With thousands of websites hacked and defaced just last week, this issue is far from over and many more individuals other than Yanis are involved. This is just the beginning as well. One can only expect this defacement process to continue.
