Discussions on Microsoft's security product have been ongoing for some time. The discussion will really kick in as Microsoft let it be known the Windows OneCare Live is coming out shortly. The new product is expected to challenge Symantec and McAfee for dominance.
The product will cover all the bases of software security including antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall software along with back-up features and several tune-up tools. OneCare will be a subscription-based service only. No box sets to buy like competitors Symantec and McAfee. The service will run about $50 a year.
The story reported by CNET said the product would be out sometime before summer. All the final details will be released later in the week. The test versions have been out since the middle of the summer and a public test was put out in December.
The fee is a substantial savings over competitors Symantec and McAfee of about $20 and they may give them a nice kick. The big play will come however when computers start shipping with Vista on it and this is one of the optional programs available for security.
Microsoft does say though their primary market is aimed for those folks who either don't have security or are letting their pay service lapse. According to the CNET article, Microsoft things about 70% of household fall into this category.
How the other security software companies deal with this will be interesting. Symantec has already talked to the European Union over this, asking about possible monopoly problems. Whether anything comes of this remains to be seen.
