While the NyxemD virus remained a low threat for many people in this country, some places had a problem with it. Reports from other countries are coming in detailing the extent of the damage. The first big report comes from India and a few users had problems.
F-Secure received an update from Sanjay Katkar of Quickheal, an antivirus firm in India.
The news is by today morning I had received confirm reports of 4800 to 5000 PCs with data damaged by this worm.
We carried out a phone survey among all our retailers to find out any complaints received by them and we came to above figures. This figure is from cities of Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Nagpur, Nashik & Baroda.
Now I believe that the actual number of PCs corrupted by this worm can be higher as we don't get reports from many of the states and cities of India.
Other countries experienced problems too and reports from those countries appear to be minimal at this point. Certainly not all the machines initially infected were damaged. Many managed to escape the fiendish little worm even after they had originally contracted the virus through good cyber sanitation practices.
Overall, this was a good exercise in following a worm through it's metamorphasis into the nastiness it's slated to become. Fortunately, good organizations and companies are able to provide the resources needed to stop it.
