Mozilla pushed out a new version of its Firefox browser on Wednesday and it contains a number of critical security updates. Something to note about this release is it's the first time Mozilla has used the auto-update feature.
This was the first time the feature was used and there were some problems. Introduced in the 1.5 version, several users expressed irritation over the staggered system Mozilla is using for updates. This is simply to prevent them from being overloaded.
The biggest fixes out of this update are the eight security fixes for problems rated as highly critical by security firms. Most of these would be considered dangerous because they have holes that are exploitable. At this point though, there are no known exploits floating around.
Apparently, another problem was memory leaks. According to PC world, Orchant, a blogger and marketing exec for VanDyke Software, reported his browser was consuming as much as 200MB. He reported the memory leak was not just about 45MB.
The security updates have gone relatively smoothly. As of Thursday, about 10 million updates has been done and more are on the way.
