One of the great battles raging on the Internet is one of spyware and adware. People don't want it and don't need it because it can cause real problems for one's computer. Microsoft's new two-way firewall, OneCare doesn't offer right way protection because it leaves the hole open for spyware to get into a user's PC.
This is a bit of debate going on right now regarding Microsoft's new product in a beta version currently. The problem is the firewall has a default setting that allows applications using Java Virtual Machine or having a digital signature to connect to the net.
One might ask what the problem is. As Microsoft pointed out on their blog, hackers rarely use those marks on their programs. The problem is spyware often does, in an effort to look legitimate. These spyware and adware programs, being marked, are able to walk right through and play around in one's computer.
CNet talked to Mark Curphey of Foundstone, a division of McAfee. He told them, "Any firewall, any security device should have default deny." The OneLook stuff didn't.
Critics from all sides continue to discuss this issue and many feel like Microsoft is making a crucial error by continuing to leave this whole open and not changing it. We only hope the Redmond giant will look at the this problem while it's still in beta and change it before the final product comes out.
