A new study released by Computer Economics suggests financial losses world wide from malware are down. The figures say the year 2005 hit losses upwards of $14.2 billion this was the first time since 2002 the number actually went down.
These drops were attributed to more firms addressing their security issues more seriously and really paying attention to these issues. Networks have worked to become more secure and the report speaks well of security software companies as they continue to product quality product.
The other, not so good news from this report is just changes in the way the hackers are working. They've changed their focus into tighter areas. They don't aim so much for general chaos and damage, they have specific targets of their attacks and they hit them hard. They're focused on making big money now instead of just costing companies money in damages.
Overall, the outlook wasn't great however. The report said all the good stuff going on including better security software and tougher policies from companies still can't get the job done. The consensus was that cybercrime is like any other crime and should be treated as such .
