IBM's Internet security study released yesterday has tremendous amount of useful information. As some of the results are mulled over, one thing has become apparently clear: users don't trust the Internet.
Last year was abound with all kinds of computer crime, including identity fraud, hacking, phishing, spamming, etc. Then there were attacks on our government, our companies and businesses, our universities. No one is free from these attacks, not even the U.S. military. What's more is every time they say they're working on it, some 19-year-old from Europe has elected to hack the U.S. Navy instead of reasonable amounts of sleep.
No wonder people are afraid to do business online. The IBM study said people are three times more scare of cybercrime than physical crime. That's probably a fair assessment too. While more traditional crimes, like burglary, assault, etc. still happen, cyber crime is much easier to get away with.
According to the study of 700 adults, 70% said they only shop at sites with a security seal or image of some sort. 64% said they don't even conduct transactions on share computers. But wait there's more. 18% say the won't pay their bills online anymore.
If technology is to continue as the wonderful thing it is and the Internet continues to thrive and grow, those security gaps must be closed. People must be confident to pay their bills online, to shop online etc. for it to continue to expand in the fashion it has.
One thing notable was the belief that people themselves believe they are responsible for their online mishaps. This means they are willing to learn new information regarding their own Internet security. This is a good sign, the industry just has to provide the tools and education to take advantage of that.
