The Federal Bureau of Investigation plans to put a new Cybercrime Command Center at Louisiana State University (LSU) located in Baton Rouge. This is part of the federal government's expanding initiative to go after cybercrime.
Cybercrime has become a major problem in the world today and the FBI has recognized this, prioritizing cybercrime just behind anti-terrorism and foreign counterintelligence. It ranks higher than public corruption.
The FBI will utilize the now empty 5000 square-foot facility used for the Wetlands Biogeochemistry Laboratory. The Bureau has earmarked $300,000 to equip the facility and they plan to open it sometime in the fall.
This regional facility will be assist various law enforcement agencies in working through computer evidence relating to various crimes. Cybercrime is certainly a growing business.
As cybercrime begins to overlap into other businesses, including the aforementioned terrorism, drug trafficking and other forms of organized crime including extortion, phishing, and viral attacks, this will give the FBI another tool in their arsenal.
