A recent security update for Apple's Quicktime media player would seem to be the culprit for a number of glitches being reported on Apple's forums. The patch is being blamed for problems in both Mac OSX and Windows.
The update, Quicktime 7.0.4, went out on Tuesday to fix a number of security vulnerabilities rated as serious. The flaws allowed for remote exploitation by convincing users to open a rotten file. This is nothing terribly uncommon. The problem reports for the patch say it's deleting applications and files.
At this point, Apple has pulled the new patch and Mac maker's website, they put out a new little item that removes the 7.0.4 and puts back the 7.0.1 update. This way, any problems reported for 7.0.4 can be reversed.
Unfortunately, the fixes are sometimes as bad as the problems they solve. In this case, Apple was able to at least fix the thing back to the way it was prior but they must still work to resolve this issue correctly.
