The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) posted a warning regarding a fraudulent email floating around requesting financial help for the survivor of the Sago Mine accident.
The bulletin says the email claims to be written by an attending physician at the hospital where the survivor is being treated. It's discussing his condition and the financial cost needed for a full recovery. The Bureau urges people not to open or respond to these emails and verified for legitimacy before responding.
This is just another example of phishing scams in the wake of a disaster. As the FBI points out in their bulletin, these crept up after 9/11, the Tsunami and Katrina. People set up scams, asking people to donate money and taking advantage of their good will. The FBI said in a statement:
The FBI takes these matters seriously and is working with other law enforcement and private industry partners to identify the person(s) responsible. Anyone who has received an e-mail of this nature is asked to file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
