Another bank lost another bank tape, this time with upwards of 90,000 names on it. The People's Bank in Bridgeport, Connecticut reported lost the tape en route the bank said today.
The bank is contacting the names on the list. The tape contained names, address, Social Security numbers and checking numbers of all the 90,000. The bank statement said the tape was headed to the TransUnion credit bureau. It was shipped UPS. While UPS is searching for the package, they've had similar incidents in the past.
At this point, the bank said they've not had any reports of unauthorized activity. This means the chances are it's still floating around in a UPS hub somewhere. The bank did say the information wouldn't do fraudsters any good though. The tapes require a mainframe and software to read. Also, no major, vital information was contained on the tapes. The bank will also provide the free credit monitoring service for a year. There is a principal involved here, however.
Once again, there is a problem. It's obvious UPS can't be trusted in this matter. They've lost tapes with this type of information on them before. Occasionally one hears of a misplaced package from the company and mistakes do happen. This is one time, however, mistakes cannot happen.
Seemingly every day, there's yet another security breach of some type, making one wonder just how seriously these banks take their security issues. While it does seem that no damage was done this time, whether it's 40 million identities or 90,000, eventually, real havoc will be caused because this information wasn't watched tightly enough. The companies have to do better.
