Identity fraudsters never stop, certainly not in the new year. The Bahamas luxury resort Atlantis reported to the SEC they had information lifted from their computer system with some 55,000 identities compromised.
It appears this is a pretty standard identity theft. The information stolen included names, addresses, social security numbers, drivers' license numbers, credit card and bank account information.
In an effort to make amends, Atlantis is offering a one-year credit monitoring service. At this point, Atlantis isn't sure how it happened other than it was either an inside job or an outside hacker.
This is a major deal for this resort, with about 2300 rooms on Paradise Island. The resort employs over 5,000 residents of the Bahamas. The resort is one of the toniest resorts in the world, getting thousands of tourists every year.
This is one of the first major identity fraud hits of the year. Also, this comes just a few weeks after the Marriott Vacation Club got hacked for a breach, compromising over 200,000 names. It's hopeful however, that in the coming months, identity fraud will slow down but, based on the way these games work, it's very improbable.
