Probably when most people think of theft and iPods, many think of downloading illegal music. Not so in this case out of Manchester, Connecticut. While we generally deal with cyber security issues, sometimes interesting tidbits come along that are worth noting.
CompUSA was the unfortunate victim of this crime, however it was mostly their own fault. Two individuals walked out with $8,000 worth of iPods and the whole thing was caught on tape. The problem is, no employees were around to stop them. One of the individuals just quietly, calmly walked behind the counter, handed out the iPods to the associate and then walked out with them.
The local TV network, WFSB, interviewed a witness to the event:
"I was just standing at the counter for about fifteen minutes and no one came over to help us. There were a few other people standing behind us and there was no one around," said Luc Parandes. "It's pretty easy to steal from that place if no one's watching anyone."
It's entirely possible these iPods could show up one of several high quality auction houses for some unknown sum of money or the product could probably be moved locally. Online auctions are popular for this type of thing. In any event, the discussions with senior management and employees should be most entertaining. I'm sure other places in Manchester are hiring right now.
