It would seem the updates for the WMF may have started already. Reports are coming in of the update kicking and Microsoft issued a press release about the update not long ago. While bulletin says the update won't be available until 2:00 pm PT, the updates started earlier than that.
Rod Trent posted the release on his blog about at a little before 3:00 pm EST. Microsoft had originally planned to release the Graphic Rendering patch with their standard "Patch Tuesday" release but elected to move up the time due to the severity of the problem. Customers were also quite vocal about the need to for a patch immediately.
The release, called MS06-001, is going out as this article is being written and Microsoft plans a special webcast on Friday to provide the details on the update. They will also release other updates on Tuesday as part of the normal patch release schedule.
Alex Eckelberry of Sunbelt Software commented, "It's great they fixed this bug. We're very happy to see them get this patch out earlier than on Patch Tuesday. This vulnerability was worrying a lot of people, and seeing people broadly using unofficial hotfixes and workarounds is certainly a concern."
Fortunately there have been no major threats dished out yet and Microsoft managed to head this one off at the pass. Microsoft got lucky on this one but one can assume there will be more "zeros" in the future. Microsoft will need to be able to react just as quickly and not plan to wait for the regular monthly update in many cases.
