Chinese authorities cracked down on Internet porn, saying on Friday they shut down 598 web sites. This the latest attempt by the Chinese government to crack down on illicit Internet activities, but they said fraud and online gambling continue to proliferate.
The raid picked up 25 arrests arrests and 224 suspects have been detained since this operation started back in the spring. This isn't first time China has busted heads in the porn business. Last year, they nailed over 500 people.
The Chinese Internet population continues to grow steadily with numbers of 100 million and second only to the U.S. The continued growth of the Internet is presenting a problem for China.
The Chinese media Xinhua gave out some details for this current campaign. Chinese authorities told the news source they've set up a network to report pornography including a website and phone numbers. So far they've received 733 phone calls with 16,711 in online tips.
While they encourage that growth because it means more economic opportunity, it becomes more difficult to control gambling and pornography as well as things like identity fraud. Particularly since many scams come from China. And as more and more Chinese get online, the problem will only get worse.
