Sony BMG is in the process of settling one class action suit against them for their recent fiasco. The preliminary settlement was submitted for court approval. The rootkit fiasco was discovered several weeks ago and this discovery extracted a heavy price from Sony BMG.
Most people who follow this industry have surely heard of the notorious and nefarious rootkit row. This occurred when Sony BMG had software added to their music CDs in an effort to prevent piracy. The problem is the two bits of software turned out to be rather nasty because introduced spyware into the computer, generated vulnerabilities that weren't there previously, and in the case of the MediaMax software, installed software on the user's computer whether they agreed to it or not.
Multiple cases have been filed. The one in New York on behalf of people who bought the CDs is being settled. Alex Eckelberry (one of my favorite bloggers) got hold of the initial terms and posted them on his Sunbelt blog. A lot of the stated terms have to do with nullifying the effects of the offending software and making sure people don't have to deal with it anymore.
While this is the first step in Sony BMG correcting its legal problems, this fight certainly isn't over. Sony still faces a class action suit from the Electronic Frontier Foundation as well as a lawsuit from the state of Texas. This is going to be a trying time for the massive record company.
