Another case of vanishing backup tapes, this time from an Orlando office of Marriott, may have exposed the personal details of over 200,000 people to an unknown party.
Employees and members of the Marriott Vacation Club Int'l may receive a note from the firm about the possible exposures of their Social Security numbers and other information. Computer backup tapes containing information about some 206,000 people have disappeared, a USAToday report noted.
Information on those tapes included names and bank and credit card details along with those Social Security numbers. Marriott began notifying customers of the problem by mail.
It is not known when the tapes disappeared. Marriott has notified authorities and begun searching for the tapes. The company also plans to conduct various internal investigations into the problem.
Computer tapes for other firms went missing in 2005. Tapes containing information for CitiFinancial customers disappeared from UPS in June. In February, tapes from Bank of America also disappeared; among the customers affected was Vermont Senator Pat Leahy along with info for some 1.2 million federal employees.
